The Committee discussed various general approaches to addressing the
curricular problems identified in previous discussions.
The Committee felt that the proposal by Chang Liu
addressed the fundamentals only for a certain segment of the
department and that it would not serve as a general solution,
but there was a sentiment to make sure that we retain the flexibility
within our curricula for a student to pursue
a course of study along the proposed lines.
There appeared to be a consensus in favor of the general
principles of the plan to move the "advanced core" (3-of-5-list courses)
to the junior level, in practice as well as in number, and to review
the content of these and our other required courses to focus on
the minimal set of material required by most students.
However, a process for doing so remained undecided.
