ECE Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes for February 6, 2009

1. The Minutes of the January 30, 2009 meeting were approved.
2. The revised ECE 398 proposal "Information Assurance and Trust Seminar" by Roy Campbell and Masooda Bashir was approved for 0 credit hours for the Fall 2009 semester.
3. After discussion and slight revisions of the proposed list by Sean Meyn of courses from Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering to be accepted for ECE Technical Elective credit, the courses IE 310, 330, 360, 361, 400, 410, 411, 412, 413, 430, 431, and 485 were approved. IE 300, Analysis of Data, was rejected due to overlap with ECE 313. Several courses related to human factors were left out pending further discussion; Jont Allen was asked to coordinate a visit of key faculty in that program to a future Curriculum Committee meeting.
4. Michael Oelze reviewed and recommended Bioengineering courses for the ECE Technical Elective list; BIOE 201, 202, 280, 302, 406, 414, 415, 417, 419, 461, 466, 467, 472, 473, 475, 476, and 480 were approved. BIOE 205 was rejected due to excessive overlap with ECE 210.
5. The Chair was asked to contact Brian Cunningham, Chair of the BIBA Committee, regarding the status and encouraging the maintenance of BIOE 417, which was developed and taught by Bruce Wheeler, who recently retired. The Committee felt that this was an important course that should be maintained, although Greg Timp's new course may fill much of the need.
6. The lists recommended by Doug Jones for Integrative Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology were approved for technical elective credit, namely IB 331, 334, 335, 348, 368, 401, 402, 404, 405, 406, 420, 421, 423, 424, 425, 426, 427, 429, 431, 432, 433, 440, 441, 442, 443, 444, 445, 446, 449, 451, 452, 453, 461, 462, 463, 464, 466, 467, 468, 469, 470, 471, 472, 473, 474, 475, 480, 481, 482, 483, 484, 485, and 486, and MCB 150, 250, 251, 252, 253, 300, 301, 315, 316, 354, 400, 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 408, 410, 412, 413, 414, 415, 416, 417, 418, 419, 421, 424, 425, 426, 430, 431, 433, 435, 441, 446, 480, 481, 482, and 484.
7. Donna Brown suggested that the list of approved technical electives is now too large to be adequately maintained by the Curriculum Committee. She recommended that we develop a general policy that gives guidance to the ECE Advising Office, which would maintain the lists.
