EE Core/Advanced Core Reality Check Questions (Jones)
We all agree that a four-year BSEE curriculum is simply too short for
students to learn everything that might be useful in an electrical
or computer engineering career,
and that our core and advanced core courses (since they're required of all
or the majority of our students) should focus only on basic, fundamental
material essential to the success of most electrical or
computer engineers in most EE career paths they might choose.
Here's a checklist I came up with for myself to help me decide whether
or not any given material/course should be in the Core or Advanced Core,
for students in my area.
- I believe that more than 85% (Core) or 55% (Advanced Core) of our students
will be substantially hindered in their careers by not knowing/taking this
material/course.
- I would/have myself personally been hindered or constrained in my career
by lack of this material/course.
- Think of the top three people in industry in my area. How many of these
would have been hindered in their career by lack of this material/course?
